Russell Walls Obituary

Rev. Russell Lowell Walls, 89, of Christian, set sail for his new home on Friday, March 22, 2019, leaving from Trinity Healthcare Services of Logan.

Born on January 19, 1930, at Leatherwood, he was the son of the late Leander Milton and Orpha Belle (Browning) Walls.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Corda Lea Walls; three children: Ronald, Ellen, and Sonny Walls; five brothers: Arley, James “Jimmy,” Danny, Cecil Ardell, and Teddy Walls; two sisters: Betty Woolum and Opal Lester; one half-sister, Hazel Morgan; and one daughter-in-law, Dinah Walls.

Lowell, as he was affectionately known, was a true man of God. In 1947, he became a Christian and was called into the ministry in 1948. A devout Christian, he devoted over 71 years of his life to serving the Lord and winning souls to Jesus Christ. In the Spring of 1972, along with Rev. Clarence Fortner, Lowell founded the Christian Freewill Baptist Church. Until his death, he was acknowledged as the longest-standing ordained minister in the State of West Virginia. His greatest joy was witnessing to others about the Lord and seeing souls saved. In his spare time, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever he was able. Lowell will long be remembered for his dedication and willingness to bring the love of Christ to everyone he met through his words, actions, and his witness. With every life he impacted, he never failed to shine his light for the Lord.

Those left to cherish his memory are three sons: Jerry (Ariana) Walls of Smith Mountain Lake, VA., Louie P. Walls and Dennis J. (Betty Jo) Walls all of Christian; eight grandchildren: Jerry (Bridget) Walls, II, of Cyclone, Brian Walls of Harrisonburg, VA., Donna (Chad) Gill of Virginia Beach, VA., Wesley (Krista) Walls of Harrisonburg, VA., Lesley Walls of Pineville, Dennis Aaron “Bub” Walls of Christian, Heather (Kevin) Lambert of Bruno, and Jessica Lea Walls of Christian; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; one brother, Darrell Walls of Lynco; one sister, Florence Cline of Charleston; his church family at the Christian Freewill Baptist Church. Lowell also leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with a host of other dear relatives and friends.

The Walls Family would like to extend a special thanks to the Trinity Healthcare staff for the wonderful care they provided.

Friends may gather with the family on Monday, March 25, 2019, at the Christian Freewill Baptist Church at Christian from 6-9 pm with a special church service beginning at 7:00 pm with Rev. Roger Browning officiating. Funeral services will commence at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at the Christian Freewill Baptist Church at Christian with Rev. Joe Layne officiating.

Burial will follow in the Leatherwood Memorial Cemetery at Justice. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
