Alfred Franklin Surber, 87, of Hampden, WV, departed this life from his home surrounded by loved ones on June 15, 2022 following a strong fight against esophageal cancer.
He was born on June 8, 1935, to the late George William “Bill” and Lydia Cline Surber in War Eagle, WV.
Alfred worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator who enjoyed tinkering with any type of engine-from cars to lawnmowers and boats. He was a member of the UMWA and served as the local chapter President for many years. Alfred’s favorite pastimes were watching NASCAR Racing and showing off his Dodge Ram. He was a kind and caring soul that would do anything for his children, grandchildren and family.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first love, wife Helen Hatfield Surber; his next love, wife Betty Trent Surber; brother, Charles McKinley Surber; sisters, Virgie Surber Grubb and Mae Surber Miller; Grandson, Gregory Alexander Surber; great-grandchild, Malen Eden Billups and son-in-law, Jerry Miller.
Alfred is survived by his loving friend and companion: Wanda Browning of Gilbert, WV; daughters: Jennifer Surber Miller of Gilbert, WV and Angie Surber (Daniel Davis) of Fayetteville, NC; sons: Gregory Surber (Amy Boone McClure) of Barboursville, WV and Randy Surber (Victoria) of Hampden, WV; step-daughter: Lisa Harless Ortiz (John) of Linden, NC; Grandchildren: Steven Browning of Linden, NC; Amanda Surber Billups (Matthew) of Callaway, VA; Alan Miller of Gilbert, WV; Quinn Miller of Gilbert, WV; Helena Surber Cline (Blake) of Hampden, WV; Cassie Surber of Barboursville, WV; Cameron “Cami” Adams of Fayetteville, NC; Nathan Surber of Barboursville, WV; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother: William E. Surber of Hampden, WV; three sisters: Betty Balance of Chesapeake, VA; Hazel Hunt of Gilbert, WV; and Ann Surber of Virginia Beach, VA; many nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own; a host of other family and friends; and his special friends at the Gilbert Senior Citizens Center.
Friends may gather with the family Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel from 12 – 2 PM for visitation. Funeral services will immediately follow with Matthew Billups officiating. Burial will follow at Hatfield Cemetery, Sharon Heights, WV. Family and Friends will serve as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Glen Carter, Larry Icenhour, Pete Cline, and Buttons Henderson.
