Betty Lou (May) Smith, 82, of Gilbert, West Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Logan Regional Medical Center.
She was born in War Eagle, West Virginia, on October 19, 1943, to the late Freeland May and Violet (Cline) May.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband: Richard Jenning Smith of 49 years; her brother: Gary May; and her two sisters: Gina Renae May and Tina Marie May; sisters-in-law: Wanda May and Carol May; and nephew: Christopher May.
Betty was a member of the Full Gospel Church of God at Baisden, WV. She was a devoted and loving mother of five, and a steady light in the lives of all who knew her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons: Richard (Rhonda) Smith of Hampden and Freeland (Sharon) Smith of Ocala, Florida; her three daughters: Rhonda (T-Bug) Mounts of Baisden, Melissa (Terry) New of Baisden, and Patty (Roy) Grimmett of Hanover. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Barry (Amy) Mounts of Princeton, Kerry (Leslee) Mounts of Evans, Georgia, Lisa (Darin) Compton of Isaban, Terry (Amanda) New Jr. of Baisden, Richard Smith III of Hampden, Joshua (Cortney) New of Baisden, Sondra Smith of Hampden, McKenna (Dwight) Justus of Lynco, West Virginia, and Cheyenne Smith of Ocala, Florida. Her legacy continues through her ten great-grandchildren: Haley (Richard) Mullins, Summer Grace (Aaron) Robinette, Zackery Mounts, Aliana New, Braxton New, Jaxson Mounts, Sebastian New, Magnolia Wynne Mounts, RaeLynn Faye New, and Wrenley Justus; along with two great-great-grandchildren expected. Betty is also survived by her brothers: Mackie May and Timer (Shirley) May; her sisters: Lois (Colin) Cline and Wilma (Edward) Lester; and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Friends may visit with the family at the Full Gospel Church of God at Baisden on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with special service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. the following day, Thursday, January 15, 2026, with Pastor Jonas Trent and Rev. Learmon Mounts officiating. Burial will follow in the May Family Cemetery at Baisden.
Pallbearers will be Barry and Kerry Mounts, Terry and Joshua New, Richard J. Smith III, and Dwight Justus.
Honorary pallbearers are Barry “T-Bug” Mounts, Terry New, Roy Grimmett, Mackie May, Edward Lester, Colin Cline, and Timer May.
