Beulah Poe Obituary

“There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart." — Gandhi

On Monday, August 12, 2024, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Beulah Poe got her promotion to guardian angel after a long earthly life of 97 years. Beulah Mae (Davis) Poe was born on May 7, 1927, in Verner, West Virginia to Jessie and Ocie (Browning) Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Verner Poe; her children: Christena Poe and Verner Poe, Jr (Butch); her granddaughter Tara Poe; her great grandson, Preston Poe; her son-in-law George Wheatley; her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Poe along with her seven siblings and parents.

Beulah married the love of her life, Verner on April 29,1944 and proceeded to create a family. Together they raised 5 children: Christena, Butch, Cathy, Brenda and Lori and instilled a legacy of love passed on to 9 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 23 great, great grandchildren. Beulah was spirited, lovely and unconventional. She loved the freedom of driving and feeling the wind in her hair. Due to this passion many of her jobs involved driving as she was a Powder Puff Race Car Driver; hauled timber and coal during World War II and was the first female bus driver in Mingo County, WV. She retired from bus driving in 1989, but touched so many lives of the children she took to school every day.

Beulah was very involved in the political process and through the years worked the polls, drove people from Gilbert and the surrounding area to vote and even ran for Town Council at 84. Beulah held many titles in her life, but her favorites were mother and grandmother. As a result of losing her own mother when she was only 3 years old, Beulah never took a minute for granted with her family. She was fiercely protective and loved her family as only a devoted matriarch could. Nobody ever left her home hungry or feeling unloved. Beulah had a sincere and earnest faith in God that she shared with everyone she encountered. She was a member of Verner Community Church.

Those left to cherish her memory and continue her legacy are her children Cathy Wheatley of Man, WV; Brenda Poe of Gilbert, WV and Lori Poe Wolford (Theodore) of Gilbert. Her grandchildren, Stephanie Poe-Thomas (Adam) of Fort Mill, SC; Christy Wheatley of Jacksonville, Fl; Eddie Jones (Jackie) of Fellsmere, Florida; Penny Jones of Gilbert, WV; George Wheatley (Nena) of Man, WV; Teresa Schoolcraft of Man, WV; Ben Wheatley (Lesley) of Man, WV and Seth Poe of Greenville, SC. Edd Jones of Florida; her sister in laws, Ruby Hagy of Gilbert, WV, Alice Poe of Wharncliffe, WV and Lavy Davis of Pads Fork, WV; her girls: April Trent (Dwayne) of Gilbert, WV and Bonnie Gilkerson (Bill) of Wharncliffe, WV; and her bonus daughter, Joann Fuller of Huntington, WV along with 26 great grandchildren and 23 great, great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled on Friday, August 16th from 6:00-9:00 pm at Mounts Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Cresong officiating, and the Funeral Service will be performed by Rev. Rick Endicott on Saturday, August 17th at 1:00pm. Burial will be at Poe Cemetery on Elmo White Drive.
