Carl Andrew Cohenour of Wharncliffe, WV, was called up by his Lord and Savior to come home and claim his just rewards on Friday August 1, 2025. He closed his eyes for the last time, in his favorite recliner, and was surrounded by loved ones that fought so hard to save him and keep him here. He fought a good fight, prayed for his healing, and God answered his prayer.
For 71 short years, Carl made this world a better place by his mere presence. He was one of Christ’s greatest warriors and champions, and his warm heart and personality emitted God’s love and grace for all his children. He ministered to so many and brought so many hearts closer to God through his testimony, and his love for people. He found the strength he needed through the love of his family, and to Carl everyone was family. Family by blood, Family by choice, and Family through Christ.
God blessed this world on January 27, 1954, when Carl was born at Iaeger, WV to Grover and Viola (Brown) Cohenour. He was the fifth of eight children, a large family, but a closeness unmatched by many. He was a scholar and athlete. He was part of the first Gilbert Lions Football team and excelled in school. He graduated Salutatorian of the Gilbert High School Class of 1971. After graduation he was called to serve his country, and he entered the United States Air Force where he trained as a language specialist, specializing in the Arabic language. He was proud of that accomplishment and enjoyed his time living in Greece, but the love of family eventually called him back home and after an honorable discharge he returned back to where his heart belonged.
He met the love of his life, Della Mae (Cline) Cohenour on his return home, and after a very short courtship and whirlwind romance they married and have spent the last 50 years building the life and family he was so proud of. Their love created two daughters, and from there the love continued to grow by the addition of a son and six grandchildren.
He was known for so many things. His warm and gentle spirit, the most amazing smile, his witty sense of humor, infectious laugh, and his love of family and the Lord. His intelligence was unmatched, but something he was very humble about. He was a master of many things, and we believe he could fix anything. He loved the coal mines and worked as a master electrician, anyone that worked with him respected him, and were influenced by him in some way.
To leave a legacy behind and many accomplishments is something to be proud of, but what Carl would be most proud of is the love that he has left behind through his influence on other people, the hearts he has imprinted on, and the works of God he has done through all the lives he has touched. He is absent from his body now, and present with the Lord, but he will live on through all the love and works of God that we can all continue to do in honor of him.
He was greeted by all those he loved and that passed before him: His parents, brothers Charles and Mark Cohenour, sister Betty Dotson, Brothers-in- law- Earl Dotson Sr, Harold New, Willard Carter, and Sidney Roberts. Sisters-in-law Tyna Carter and Tammy Cohenour, and nephew Johnny Dotson.
