Carol Ann (Mounts) Butcher

Carol Ann (Mounts) New Butcher, of Man, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on the morning of July 3rd, 2026. She was born on March 8th, 1954, in Welch, WV, at Stevens Clinic Hospital, and from her earliest days carried a gentle strength and kindness that would define her life.

Carol graduated from Gilbert High School and continued her education at Marshall University, where she was a proud member of the sorority Delta Kappa Gamma. She dedicated her studies to Teaching and Special Education, answering a calling to serve children with patience, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

She began her teaching career at Gilbert, where she also poured her energy and enthusiasm into coaching cheerleading, shaping young lives both inside and outside the classroom. Carol later continued her work in education at Man, where she retired after a lifetime of service to her students, her school, and her community.

Carol was preceded in death by her late father: Leonard Mounts, Jr., her beloved mother: Iva Jewell Mounts, and her brother—who was more like a father figure—Lowell “Hoppy” Mounts. She was also preceded in death by her late husband Gary Lee Butcher, her nephew who was more like a son, Danny Wade Wiley, cherished family members: Connie Butcher, Dorothy New, Linda Lee Mounts, and TC Thompson. She also mourned the loss of her loyal dog, Duke, who was a faithful companion for many years.

Although Carol loved teaching, her favorite role in life was being a mother to Cara Lynn New (JR Thompson) and Cayla LeeAnn Butcher. Even more importantly, she cherished being called MiMi to her grandchildren: Colton Justice, Trey Thompson, Thomas Thompson, and Cayliana May. Her love for them was boundless, and she poured her heart into every moment she spent with them.

Carol also leaves behind her dear sister Linda Sue Wiley, and Linda’s daughter Candice (Butch) Browning, whose children John and Dani Lynn Browning were more like Carol’s own daughter and grandchildren. She is also survived by Linda’s son Aaron (Tammy) Wiley. Carol also leaves behind her brother Jerry “Fleet” (Marcella) Mounts, and his daughters Julie (Andy) Grimmett and Gina (Barrett) Justice, along with their children—each of whom Carol loved far beyond the bounds of aunt and niece or nephew. To her, they were family in the deepest, most heartfelt way.  Carol is also survived by her nephews, sons of the late Lowell "Hoppy" Mounts: Joshua (Cassie) Mounts and Jordan Lee Mounts—who were more than nephews, but sons in her heart. Carol loved Joshua (Cassie) Mounts’ children as dearly as her own grandchildren. Her love extended even further to Shawn Sanson and Nicholas Meade, whom she cared for deeply.

Carol had a heart of gold and a gift for making everyone feel like family. She loved with her whole heart, and her smile could brighten any room she entered. Selfless to her core, she always made sure everyone around her was okay, had what they needed, and felt cared for. She never forgot a birthday or holiday, and she delighted in gifting cards to her daughters, grandchildren, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, great‑nieces, and great‑nephews—each one treated as if they were her own children.

She will be sadly missed, leaving behind a host of family, friends, and neighbors—many of whom were more like family—who will forever carry her love in their hearts.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 10, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by funeral proceedings at 1:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Bill Cantrell. Carol will then be laid to rest among loved ones at the Mounts Family Cemetery at Gilbert Creek, WV.

To honor Carol’s deep faith, the family wishes to include the comforting message of Footprints. The poem tells of a person walking along the beach with the Lord, seeing two sets of footprints during life’s easier days and only one set during the hardest moments. Confused, the person asks why God left them during their trials. The Lord gently explains that during those most difficult times, “it was then that I carried you.”

This message reflects Carol’s life and the faith she lived by—trusting that God walked beside her, and carried her, every step of the way.
