Chloe Ellen Burgess, 101 years and 5 months old of Baisden, WV, went peacefully to her heavenly home on January 25, 2023.
She was born on August 21, 1921 in Mingo County to the late Johnce and Allie Cline. She was the oldest of 9 children with her two youngest sisters surviving her: Lona Blankenship and Corenia (Denvol) Riffe. She is also survived by her son: Allen (Jan) Lester of Kingsport, TN and her daughter: Diana Perry of Baisden, WV; 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Chloe was also preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children: Burgess Callaway Lester; her daughter and son in law: Gabriella and Benny Lester; two infant daughters: Joan Christine Lester and Lillie Mae Lester, and an infant son: Zachary Lester. She was also preceded in death by her second husband: Donald Ray Burgess; three sisters: Darkus Burney, Geneva Lester, and Lula Belle Bailey; and three brothers: Bill Cline, Hoover Cline, and Roosevelt Cline.
Chloe’s first job was at the U.S. Post Office in Isaban, WV. Following that she worked at the WV Dept. of Employment Security in various positions in Williamson, Charleston, and Welch, WV. She then became the Post Mistress in Baisden where she worked until her retirement in 1990 at the age of 70. She loved sewing, quilting, crocheting, and cake decorating. She was also a notary for 40 years and helped start the Baisden Volunteer Fire Dept. Chloe was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Justice until her health began to fail. Her good friends Rueben and Robin Mitchell would pick her up for church. They would also take her meals (their beans and cornbread being her favorite).
Friends and Family may gather on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Mounts Funeral Home from 11:00am-12:00pm where funeral services will begin at 12:00pm with Pastor Jim Nagy officiating. Burial will follow at the Lester Family Cemetery located at Baisden, WV.
The world lost a gem with the passing of Chloe. She was a prominent member of the Gilbert area who touched many lives. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have known and loved her.
