Obituary

DeAnna Lee New, 71, of Gilbert Creek, departed this life on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Logan Regional Medical Center.  DeAnna was born on July 26, 1951 at Stevens Clinic Hospital in Welch West Virginia to Tommy C. Lee and Lucille Matney Lee.

She grew up in Isaban and Columbus Ohio before moving home with her family to West Virginia in 1965, and was a graduate of Gilbert High School, Class of 1969.

On December 24, 1969, DeAnna married the love of her life Joe Dale New in Grundy Virginia. Shortly following their marriage, Joe Dale was drafted into military service.  DeAnna traveled to Joe Dale’s duty stations: Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Fort Bliss, Texas; and West Germany.

DeAnna is the mother of two sons Stevie and Jamey, whom she loved dearly.

She graduated Marshall University, summa cum laude Class of 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in education.  She also obtained her master’s degree from Marshall.  During her 27 year teaching career, she taught at Beech Creek Elementary, Gilbert Grade School, and completed her career as Mingo County Title One Reading Director.  DeAnna was loved by her students and her fellow faculty and staff.

DeAnna was a proud member of the Horsepen Southern Baptist Church for over 20 years.  She enjoyed reading, music, arts and crafts, and loved going to the beach.

In her later years, the other loves of her life were her beloved grandchildren, Rebekah, Chance, and Colton. The day she became a grandmother was one of the happiest days of her life.  She loved reading books to her grandkids, sharing music with them, and supporting them in all their activities.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 53 years: Joe Dale New of Gilbert Creek; Stephen, Amy, and Rebekah New of Beckley; Jamey, Summer, Chance, and Colton New of Chapmanville; her sister: Belinda Baldwin and husband Sam; and beloved nephew: Thomas Baldwin of Kingston, Tennessee. DeAnna was preceded in death by her parents: Tommy and Lucille Lee; and her siblings: Tommy Duane And Pamela Lee.

The family would like to thank DeAnna’s lifelong best friend, classmate, and fellow teacher: Margo Mounts, as well as Lillie and Walter Hatfield, Troy and Ruth New, Bobby and Nancy New, and Barbara Rambo for their caretaking in the final months of DeAnna’s life.

Friends may gather with her family for visitation on Sunday February 19, 2023 at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel beginning at 1 PM.  Funeral services will commence at 2 PM with Reverend Brian Warden officiating.  Burial will follow the funeral service at Hollywood Cemetery, with friends and family serving as pallbearers.
