Gregory Dean Smith, 56, of Wardensville, WV passed away at his residence on Sunday September 19, 2021.
Born on New Years Day, January 1, 1965 at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley, WV, he was the son of the late Anthony “Tommy” Smith and Patsy (Charles) Ritchie-Skaggs.
In addition to his parents, Gregory is also preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Anthony Smith.
Gregory enjoyed and loved the solitude of his home in Hardy County, WV. He was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith. He will be remembered as a kind and quite man, who had a special love and fascination with trains. He enjoyed his many pictures of trains from his childhood in the Amigo coal camp to his trips along the Tug Fork River Valley with his father, Anthony. It was during these trips that Greg developed a love for the area along the Tug River in Mingo County near the confluence of Beech Creek and the Tug Fork River. It’s near this place Greg wanted to be buried. Gregory was a 1989 graduate of Concord College with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education.
Gregory is survived by his son: Justin Anthony Smith of Roanoke, VA.; his former sister-in-law: Barbara Smith-Whitaker of Blountville, TN; 2 nieces: Sheena Smith-Sammons and Shelly Smith both of Blountville, TN; a nephew: Logan Anthony Smith also of Blountville, TN; his special friend Denise Day of Strasburg, VA; and a host of extended family from Pike County, KY.
To honor Gregory’s wishes, his remains were buried in the Looney Curve Cemetery near Beech Creek, WV overlooking the Norfolk Southern mainline between Bluefield and Williamson along the Tug Fork River.
