Mr. James “Snuffy” Smith, age 73, of Lebanon, Virginia, passed away Friday (December 6, 2024) at his home. Born August 22, 1951 in Iaeger, West Virginia, he was a son of the late James Winfred and Ruby Jean Sloan Smith. He had lived in Lebanon for the past eleven years, moving from Cottageville, West Virginia.
A disabled coal miner, he had formerly been employed by Eastern Associated Coal Corporation and was a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the UMWA Sub 28 Chaplin Corp that provides funeral honors for members. He was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church and always enjoyed sharing a song for the congregation. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and participating in sports. He was a former Golden Glove Boxing Champ with the Kiwanis Club of Gilbert, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ryan Smith in 2008.
Survivors include his wife of forty-three years, Kelly Cook Smith of the home; granddaughter, Amanda Sullivan and husband, Brent of Phelps, Kentucky; four siblings, Selena Lovejoy and husband, Randy of Pounding Mill, Virginia, Robin Browning and husband, Ward and Richard Smith and wife, Terri all of Gilbert, West Virginia; half-brother, Marcus Stapleton; special friend, like a brother, David Oldaker of Cottageville, West Virginia; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 Noon Monday at Rosedale Baptist Church, 352 Oakvale Ave., Rosedale, Virginia with Rev. Jeff Kinder officiating. UMWA Honors will be conducted by UMWA Sub 28 Chaplain Corp.
