Janice Morgan Obituary

“Grief expressed out loud…is the greatest praise we could ever give them. Grief is praise, because it is the natural way love honors what it misses”. -Martin Prechtel

Janice Lorraine (Browning) Morgan, 87, passed away quietly on May 26, 2019 after a valiant fight. Pastor Roger Browning will officiate her services.  The viewing will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Coal Mountain Freewill Baptist Church.  Funeral service will be from 1:00-2:00 pm followed by burial at the Browning Family Cemetery at the Verner Community Church.

Janice was born October 16, 1931 to Elmer and Ollie Browning of Spice Creek.  She was one of eight Browning children.  Raised in Spice Creek, she spent many carefree summers in Ohio on her grandparent’s farm.  She attended Gilbert High School earning her degree in June 1949.  On May 21, 1951 she married the love of her life, Gus “Buddy” Morgan.  They lived in Mississippi and Maine together as he served his country in the Air Force.  After moving to Coal Mountain, WV.  Stan, Kim and Sherri arrived, and completed the Morgan family.

Janice loved her home and took pride in creating a beautiful place to raise her children.  Although a consummate homemaker, she chose to work outside of the home going to work for the United States Postal Service in 1956 at the Coal Mountain Post Office. In a time where many women did not work outside the home, Janice chose this path unknowingly inspiring her daughters, sisters and nieces.  Although she retired from the USPS in 1989, she always held a love for letters and cards.  She remembered those she loved with a card on special occasions, or a letter just because she was thinking of them.  Even in the past several years, she still lovingly sorted her mail and continued to write.

She felt most at peace at the beach and adored traveling.  Her passion for books continued until her death.  She admired the beauty in flowers, the color pink, and a well cleaned house.  After working for 33 years, she enjoyed watching shows she never had time to enjoy like The Waltons, and every evening was spent with Pat Sajak and the Wheel of Fortune.

Her children fondly remember her love for The Platters, The Soundtrack to Dr. Zhivago, and Bobby Vinton. In fact, she took her girls to their first live concert to see Bobby Vinton at the WV State Fair inspiring an appreciation for music which continues to comfort them.

Janice loved her church, shopping and visiting her favorite hair salon. Many who cherished her will miss her Baked Apple Sauce Cake which was a staple at many church and family events.

Preceded in death by her love, Buddy Morgan; her precious grandson, Jarrod Mitchell and her son-in-law, Fred Laxton; her brothers, Gerald and Bennett Browning; her sisters, Eloise Slack and Dorothy Poe; brother-in-law, Bob Griffith along with her loving parents, Elmer and Ollie Browning.  Those left to cherish her memory and the impact on their lives are her son, Stanley Morgan (Sue) of Logan;  her daughters, Kim Laxton of Martinsville, VA and Sherri “Katie” Morgan of Knoxville, TN;  her brothers, Rick (Patsy) Browning and Keith (Dottie) Browning of Spice Creek; her sister, Nancy Griffith of Spice Creek; brother-in-law, Butch Poe of Spice Creek; sisters-in-law, Arlene Browning and Caroline “Hoot” Browning both of Florida;  step grandchildren, Gary (Angie) McComis of Nolan, WV, Cindy (Randy) Cline of Gilbert, WV, Brian (Angie) McComis of Huntington, WV and Steven (Katherine) McComis of Atlanta, GA along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great  nephews.
