Joe Alex “Mike” Hatfield, Jr., was born on September 20, 1939, to Joe A. Hatfield Sr. and Gladys (Brewster) Hatfield. Joe grew up in the Hampton area of Mingo County, WV. As a young man he moved to Michigan where he lived for several years before returning to West Virginia, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He entered the kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
Joe worked at the Harris #1 mine for thirty years before retiring. He was a proud member of the UMWA.
Joe was also a Corvette enthusiast, owning seven Corvettes during the course of his life. He also enjoyed motorcycles and traveled by motorcycle to 41 of the contiguous United States. He took pride in the numerous homes he owned throughout his lifetime and enjoyed having colorful flower beds at each location. Joe was also an animal lover, having several pets from early childhood.
In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his brother: Kenny Hatfield; sisters: Melinda Hatfield and Eunice Stanley; brothers-in-law: Don Stanley and Michael Smith; and niece: Tina Marie Toler.
Joe is survived by three children: Dawn Hatfield-Mackey, Brad (Shannon) Hatfield, and Todd (Angie) Hatfield; two stepchildren: Hollee (Aaron) Schau and Elizabeth (Carlos) Walker; and his sister: Geraldine Smith. He was also blessed with six grandchildren: James Atkinson, Hannah Hatfield, Haley Hatfield, Emilo Hatfield, Colton Hatfield, Jase Hatfield; four step grandchildren: Brooke Griffith, Justin Butterworth, Connor Walker and Hudson Walker; and his special friend and companion: Rachel Hatfield. Joe also had several great grandchildren and is also survived by his loving pets: Sam and Charlotte Hatfield.
Joe will have a Celebration of Life at Mounts Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Hatfield officiating on Friday, January 2, 2026. The family will receive friends an hour before the funeral from 2:00 p.m. till 3:00 p.m., with funeral services to commence at 3:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions can be made in Joe’s name to your local no kill animal shelter.
