Joey Warren Ellis, 64 of Hanover, WV entered his eternal home on Friday, July 5th, 2024, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, WV with his loving family by his side. Son of the late Joe Douglas Ellis and Lila Nell Ellis (Perry), Joey was born on September 23rd, 1959, in Iaeger, WV.
Joey was raised and lived in Justice, WV most of his life. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1977 and was a member of the Gilbert Lions Marching Band. He also played on the GHS Varsity Football Team where, in his senior year, the team finished the regular season undefeated with a 10-0 record. He continued his education at West Virginia University Institute of Technology where he graduated with a B.S. in Mining Engineering in 1983. Joey worked professionally in the logging and mining industries for over 40 years. He is known for being a skilled timber cutter and heavy equipment operator. He also owned his own trucking business, E&N Trucking, for several years.
Joey could do a little bit of everything. He did a lot of carpentry, electrical, and mechanical work over the course of his life. You name the job, and he could help you do it. Joey also enjoyed listening to and playing music. He started playing the drums when he was in the fourth grade and picked up the bass guitar later in life. During his illness and his time in the hospital, he spent most of his days with his favorite classic rock music playing in his room. He was also an antique coin collector and a passionate animal lover.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Michael Holcomb and Jackie Evans; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Susie and Dan Losh; brother-in-law: Joey Holcomb; son-in-law: Steven Cline; and special cousin: Jamie Perry.
Those who will continue to keep his memory alive, are his wife: Cindy Holcomb Ellis of Hanover; daughters: Erin Ellis (Stephen) Reid of Oak Hill and Nikki Ellis of Hanover; brothers: Wayne (Donna) Ellis of Gilbert, Jody (Fatma) Ellis of Justice, and Travis (Carrie) Ellis of Verner; sisters: Madonna Young of Farrar, TX and Kathern Goza of Mansfield, LA; grandchildren: Quinn Reid, Carter Reid, Lila Reid and Maggie Reid; special friends: Eddie Lester and Mark Smith; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other friends and all his pets who love him dearly.
The family would like to say the biggest and sincerest thank you to St. Mary’s Medical Center. They cannot speak highly enough of the care that was given to him during his lengthy stay. The staff came to know and love Joey and his family, and the family is honored by the respect that was shown to them.
In honoring Joey’s wishes, he will be cremated. He had a giving and caring nature throughout his entire life, and he will continue to help others even after his death through organ donation.
Arrangements will be made soon for a graveside memorial service to take place at the Davis Cemetery in Justice, WV.
