Paul Thomas Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Paul Thomas of Coal Mountain, born January 13, 1941, in Landville, WV.

He departed this life on January 28, 2026, at the age of 85. Paul was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Nick and Mary (Elliott) Thomas; his sisters, Ivy Ann, Eloise, and Edith; niece Cathy; mother-in-law Hazel Toler; brothers-in-law Daniel Toler and Bill Toler; and nephew Adam Toler.

Growing up on Coal Mountain, he was a dedicated baseball and softball player in the Coal Camp Baseball Leagues and was notably given a rare opportunity to try out for the Cincinnati Redlegs in the 1950's. His interests included collecting firearms and vintage coal mining memorabilia, as well as working on small engines in his workshop. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching classic Westerns on television. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Paul had a special fondness for children.  Paul was a member of the Independent Baptist Faith and a proud American who cherished family above all.

 He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda (Toler) Thomas; his son Steven Paul Thomas and wife Andrea; and grandson Blake Viars-Wilks, all of Milton, WV. Additional survivors include his brother George Thomas, nephews Eric Thomas and Davey Wallace, nieces Dee Wallace Taylor, Charlisa Thomas Smith, and Andrea Thomas Kenneda, along with brothers-in-law Bobby Toler (Karen) and Johnny Toler (Lynn), and special nephews Billy Lee Toler and Jeremy Toler. He also leaves behind a host of other nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

The funeral services will be held at Mounts Funeral Home in Gilbert, WV, on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 1:00 PM, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will be given by Pastor Louie Collins and Pastor Johnny Toler.

Pallbearers will be Blake Viars-Wilks, Buddy Toler, Honorary Pallbearers are Eugene (Cookie) Cook, Frank Hatfield, David Jordan, Jeff Fortner, Daniel Toler, Billy Lee Toler, George Thomas and Bob Dorton.

Burial will follow immediately after the service at Coal Mountain Community Cemetery in Coal Mountain, WV.
