Raymond Burgess Obituary

Raymond Jackson Burgess, 97 of Sprattsville, WV took his heavenly flight to meet his Lord and Savior along with his loving wife of 75 years Monday, April 11, 2022 from Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born January 10, 1925 at Big Creek, WV.  He was the son of the late Charley and Carrie (Stollings) Burgess, and the widower of the late Lois E. (Trusley) Burgess.

In addition to his parents and wife he was also preceded in death by his siblings: brothers Cecil, Harry Jr. (Betty), Roscoe (Mildred), Hallie, and Edward; sisters: Dolphine and Dolores Ann; daughter in law: Glenetta Burgess; brother in law: Homer Scarberry.

Raymond was a member of the Verner Community Church.

Raymond was a WWII Veteran and a member of the VFW.  While in service he served in the following battles/campaigns: Adrennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.  He was in Belgium, Germany, France and Luxemburg.  He was a Scout Master of Troop 214 Verner, WV and Scout Master of Troop 444 Tamcliff, WV.  Alumni of the National Radio Institute in Washington, DC. (Ham Radio Operator)  He also was a member of the UMWA.  Raymond worked for 44 years in the coal mines, starting in 1942 for Elk Creek Coal Company and retiring in 1986 from Powellton Co.

Raymond loved the outdoors.  He loved to hunt, fish, water ski and most of all snow ski.  He taught his children and grandchildren how to snow and water ski along with a host of others.  He always took pleasure in raising a garden and working outside.

Those left to love and cherish his memory are his children: Raymond J. Burgess, Jr. and Carolyn Sue Burgess both of Sprattsville, WV; grandchildren: Eric (Valarie) Burgess of Sprattsville, WV, Brian (Janet) Burgess of Cape Coral, FL; great grandchildren: Skyler (Rose) Burgess of Bluefield, VA, Sarah Burgess of Marysville, OH, Sadie Burgess of Sprattsville, WV, Calvin Frey of Cape Coral, FL; great great grandchildren: Lamaris Anes of Bluefield, VA; his loving sister: Helen Burgess Scarberry.  He also leaves behind a host of loving friends and extended family.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday, April 16, 2022 from 12:00 till 1:00 pm at Mounts Funeral Home where funeral services will commence at 1:00 pm with Bishop Anthony Hudgins officiating.  Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, WV.

Raymond will be carried to his resting place beside his loving wife by pallbearers: Eric Burgess, Skyler Burgess, Samuel Ball, Peyton Davis, Justin Dotson, Patrick Cline, Keith Dotson and Shane Robinette.  Honorary pallbearers are Raymond (Jacky) Burgess, Jr. and Jimmy Tiller.

He may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
