James Matney, 83 of Panther departed this life on January 10, 2018 from Princeton Community Hospital.

Born December 16, 1934 in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Kennis and Lou Jane Matney.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: Janet Lockart Matney; two sisters: Mary Ellen Griffey and Drema “Jeannie” Matney; brother: Thurman Matney; two grandchildren: Amber Keaton and Anthony “PK” Keaton; great granddaughter: Hallie Matney.

James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a member of the Mohawk Freewill Baptist Church.

Those left to love and cherish the memory of James and to mourn his passing include his children: Jennifer (Dallas) Dotson of Mohawk, Scarlett Rose (Jessie) Bailey of Vale, NC, Allan (Carrie) Matney of Mud Fork, Patrick Harry (Della Mae) Matney of Brushfork and Shannon Jody (Elizabeth) Matney of Nebo, NC; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Nellie Steeles of Panther, Brenda Justice of Monroe County and Pricie Justice of Monroe County; 6 brothers: Bobby Matney of Highpoint, NC, Johnny Matney of Highpoint, NC, Tony Matney of Wilkesboro, NC, Riley Matney of Mud Fork, Fred Matney of North Carolina and Tommy Matney of Bluewell; many nieces and nephews and a host of other dear family and friends.

Friends may gather with the family on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Mohawk Freewill Baptist Church from 6-9 pm.  Funeral services will commence on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 11:00 am with the Rev. Hassell Riffe, Rev. Cecil Hurley and Rev, Willie Coleman officiating.

Burial will follow in the Matney Cemetery, Mud Fork, WV.

James will be carried to his final resting place by family and friends.

His loving smile and gentle heart will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
